Survivor 47 – Next time on Survivor – Episode 5

Welcome to the weekly Next Time On Survivor Season 47 feature on the Inside Survivor website! If you’re new here, I’m Steph and I’m from sunny, tropical and humid Singapore. This is a small space where I give my best attempts at making sense of preview trailers and making my predictions for the next installments of the series.

The NTOS begins with Jeff introducing a “brand new Survivor variant” during the challenge. In some press photos we see players drawing tiles and splitting into two teams to take part in the challenge. This usually happens post-merge, but this is probably new to this pre-merge part of the game. It would be interesting to see some new cross-tribal relationships in a larger group and not just individuals traveling together.

Next, the trailer shows Andy and Sierra in a serious conversation. Andy responds with a “That’s secret, that’s confidential” as the shot switches to Sam. My guess is that Sierra is working with Andy again after her fight with Sam in the previous episode. Sam had expressed her dissatisfaction with her not telling him the name of the Breadwinner Alliance, while Sierra obviously thought he was overreacting to a non-issue.

It looks like there is some drama between the two, who were believed to be a couple. In addition to the ongoing strain with Anika, this could put Sam in a vulnerable position with Gata. He may even be the catalyst that leads the Breadwinners’ Alliance to success.

However, there’s an added layer, as in the promo trailer Andy shares, “They believe exactly what I give them.” I think he’s trying to mess with the others and discourage himself after he realizes it is that all alliances have cracks. In the NTOS trailer, he could have just tagged along with Sierra and let her hear what she wanted to hear as he glided through the chaos.

It seems that this is Andy’s strategy – he tries to hide from the spotlight to protect himself, especially after the premiere episode. However, I’m not entirely sure how successful it will be; Because of his clumsiness, absent-mindedness and unpredictability, voting him out would be a convenient choice at any time. For now, however, I still believe that Sierra would remain loyal to the men if Gata went to tribal council next. Anika would be my next choice for elimination.

About the Tuku tribe, the NTOS trailer shows Sue revealing to Gabe, “Tiyana threw you under the bus.” He is shocked and angrily says, “I want to destroy her dream of survival. I want to smile when it happens,” and then we see him confront Tiyana. At the moment we don’t have enough insight into Tuku, but it seems we can expect an upcoming match between Tiyana and Gabe and Sue and Kyle. Maybe we’ll see a divide between women and men, as we briefly imagined in previous episodes.

Last but not least, the Lavo tribe. Unfortunately, there aren’t many in-depth preview scenes of it this week. Sol makes a general comment, “You don’t know anything about what’s going on,” and Teeny remarks, “I’ve been outwitted.” Both sound like general statements after the blindside in the last episode. It seems that the alliance lines on Lavo aren’t really set in stone, and I think everything will continue to be fluid and chaotic until the merger.
