On Thursday, the Cult Movie Federation of Mancos will celebrate its anniversary by screening a cult classic horror film Oct. 17 at the Mancos Opera House, 136 Grand Ave. in Mancos.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the film starts at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $5 cash or check at the door. Tickets are also available for purchase in advance at the Mancos Public Library the day before the event.

Although the group said they could not reveal the film’s title due to a licensing agreement, they did provide clues.

The 1975 film is about a newly married couple named Brad and Janet who visit Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a mad scientist.

While in the villa, the couple meet “a house full of wild characters,” including a “creepy” butler, a “rocky” biker and a muscular man named Rocky.

The film also includes “elaborate” dancing and rock songs as the scientist, played by Tim Curry, introduces the couple to his latest creation.

“This event will surely leave you shaking with anticipation,” the group said.

The film is rated R for “moderate sex and nudity; mild violence and blood; mild profanity; light alcohol, drugs and smoking as well as mild frightening and intense scenes.”

Concessions will be sold and visitors 21 and older can bring their own beer.

They also encourage viewers to dress up for the film.

“Audiences are encouraged to engage in the film and dress up in their favorite costumes,” said Erik Nordstrom, one of the group’s founders.

According to CMFM, the idea for Cult Movie Federation of Mancos came about when Nordstrom spoke with Ryan Matthews at the 2023 Mancos Valley Summer BrewFest.

Following this conversation, Nordstrom and Matthews met to discuss how Mancos could regularly screen cult films, with the idea of using the Mancos Opera House as a venue.

Soon CMFM was born with the help of fellow committee members Jared Boudreaux, Jenni Kitchen and Mark Stevens.

Startup costs were “generously” provided by the Mancos Creative District, and the Mancos Public Library was appointed to manage it.

Soon the committee was able to meet with Mancos Opera House owners Philip and Linda Walters and establish a monthly tradition. The first Cult Move Night took place on October 26, 2023 and showed a classic film from 1956.

“Since that first film, a different film has been shown at the Mancos Opera House every month. At each cinema there were both regular customers and new film fans. Many CMFM enthusiasts have expressed their appreciation for how Cult Movie Nights brings the community together and that the films are entertaining, humorous or thought-provoking,” the group added.

In January, Anna Pierotti joined the organization and completed the CMFM committee. Pierotti is considered to be “leading the effort” to bring the anniversary film out of the archives so that visitors can enjoy it.
