Haason Reddick’s contract refusal explained: Why the Jets star still hasn’t played for New York after the offseason transfer

The 2024 NFL season is nearing the conclusion of its sixth week and Haason Reddick has yet to play a single snap.

There is nothing wrong with the health of the edge rusher. The Jets’ new member has no injuries or ailments keeping him off the field.

That’s his contract.

New York’s defense continues to be missing a key piece as the pass rusher stretches his defense into the regular season. Reddick isn’t playing on “Monday Night Football” against the Bills and it doesn’t look like he’ll be playing for the organization any time soon.

Even without Reddick, the Jets enter Week 6 with 18 sacks as a team. That mark is sixth-best in the league and could rise after Monday night’s celebration at MetLife Stadium.

Here’s what you need to know about Reddick’s absence and when he might return to the Jets.

Haason Reddick’s contract refusal

Reddick remains hopeful of a new contract with the Jets – even though he hasn’t played a single game for the organization.

The edge rusher spent the entire summer away from the practice field as he demanded a new contract from the club. At the beginning of August he even requested a transfer from the club that had recently taken him over.

However, the New York organization released a statement saying it would not move the veteran pass rusher.

“We have informed Haason that we will not be trading him,” GM Joe Douglas said after the request.

While new deals continued to emerge in the NFL, Reddick was not one of them. The start of the season came and went without an agreed extension, meaning Reddick has yet to play for the Jets in 2024.

When the Jets held an introductory press conference for Reddick in April, New York reportedly told him at the time that it was the franchise’s preference to discuss a new contract either during the season or afterward. Everything indicates that the club wanted to see Reddick on the field before making a long-term commitment.

As long as Reddick continues to hold out, the Jets appear unwilling to extend him, leaving the two at a stalemate.

Haason Reddick trading details

  • Jets received: EDGE Haason Reddick
  • Eagles received: Conditional 2026 3rd round pick

The Jets sent the Eagles a conditional 2026 third-round pick for Reddick this offseason.

If Reddick plays more than 67.5 percent of defensive snaps and records at least 10 sacks, this third-round pick can move up to the second round. Of course, if he keeps up this pace in zero games, that won’t happen.

Haason Reddick contract

The Jets were expected to pick up the remaining $14.5 million of Reddick’s three-year, $45 million contract, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported after the trade.

However, as long as Reddick is not on the team, he will continue to lose game checks.

Reddick has already lost more than $5 million due to missing training camp, and from this point on he will lose just under $800,000 for every game he misses.
