Texas Tech looks to build momentum against Baylor on Homecoming weekend

Texas Tech is coming off a bye week in which it sat alone atop the Big 12 standings and faces a home game against Baylor, which is tied with BYU and Iowa State at 3-0 in league play.

Baylor comes to town on the other side of the coin, 0-3 in Big 12 games and 0-4 against power conference teams this season. With both teams having a bye, the Red Raiders will be looking to keep the momentum going with a prime opportunity on their doorstep.

What got Tech this chance was finding a way to win, which has been the Red Raiders’ message all year. Four of Tech’s five wins have come by one game, which head coach Joey McGuire said has gone the other way for the Bears, making them more of a challenge than their record suggests.

“You could easily flip their record and they could be 4-2 because if you look at their last three games they had chances to win the game. So it’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m glad we’re home,” McGuire said.

“I know this sounds crazy, but I just want to be 1-0 this week and 4-0 in the Big 12, I mean we have a great chance,” McGuire said. “Whether it’s Baylor or whoever comes here to play, we just have to find a way to win.”

Texas Tech is one of the Big 12 holdovers and carries the banner for a new-look conference

The Red Raiders spent the bye-bye week getting healthy and had just one starter on the injury report this week: safety Chapman Lewis after he brought an injury-riddled defense to Tucson just over a week ago. Tech was also thinking internally about the time off, looking for future options to stay fit and hopefully play meaningful football by November.

For the Tech coaching staff, it’s all about staying focused and not overexerting the next game, as McGuire and other coaches have ties to the Baylor football program. In McGuire’s eyes, it’s not as big of a deal as it was the last two seasons.

“I do think winning last year helped this building, and I’m sure winning first year helped this building, you know, but we’re all really good friends,” McGuire said.

“I think the third year probably changed a little bit for us. You’re moving further and further away from fewer players in the squad, who we played a key role in recruiting. … So I think it’s becoming more and more like any other week in the Big 12 where you’re just trying to find a way to win.”
