Think about what you want from Catherine Fox on Grey’s Anatomy, but there’s one big reason I love her season 21 storyline

When Grey’s Anatomy is premiering its 21st season TV program 2024we went straight back to Catherine Fox in her villain era. Debbie Allen’s character has never been afraid to show people who’s boss, but her selfish killing spree that ended season 20 made people believe she completely deserved it Slap from Miranda Bailey in the recent season premiere. Allen is definitely good at playing the heel, but despite the frustrations her character may cause, I love Catherine’s storyline so far this season for one important reason: she got the original band back together.

Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. are the only two cast members who have remained series regulars for all 21 seasons since Grey’s AnatomyPremiere in 2005. Ellen Pompeo took a step back in season 19; However, she continued to appear in several episodes in the final two seasons. Catherine’s cancer story has put these three in the all-too-rare position of sharing the screen again.

As senior members of the hospital, Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey are most often seen in scenes teaching or assisting the younger surgeons. Meredith was often away from Seattle because she was working on her Alzheimer’s research. But then Meredith accidentally found out about the tumors on Catherine’s kidney and enlisted Miranda’s help to convince her to have a biopsy.

Everything came to a head in the final episode, “Now I Can See Clearly,” when complications during the biopsy made it necessary for Richard to be informed about what was happening with his wife, despite Catherine’s strict instructions not to do so. And suddenly Meredith, Miranda, and Richard were all standing around an operating table, and I got a rush of nostalgia for this trio that was there the whole time Grey’s AnatomyThe best episodes and which have been a part of my Thursday evenings for well over a decade.

What makes this story even more exciting is the fact that while our three OGs must continue to work together on Catherine’s case, Richard is angry at Meredith for keeping this secret from him. Richard and Meredith’s relationship has always been fascinating, as he had a long-standing romantic relationship with her mother. He’s part mentor, part father, and it’s at times like these – when the lines blur between their personal obligations to him and their professional obligations to his wife – that the actors are at their strongest.
