What happened to Aidan Hutchinson? What we know after a ‘brutal’ injury – NBC Chicago

Aidan Hutchinson was carted off the field during the Detroit Lions’ game against the Cowboys on Sunday and suffered an injury, prompting cruel broadcasters to deny a replay of the game.

The injury occurred when Hutchinson sacked Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Video footage appeared to show Hutchinson being hit in the leg by teammate Alim McNeill during the sack.

The Fox broadcast stopped showing replays of the violation because it deemed it too gruesome.

Hutchinson was surrounded by players from both teams as he was taken to the locker room. At this point, he was considered “out” for the game due to a lower leg injury.

Video footage of the injury was eventually posted on social media, shocking many viewers.

Jeff Mueller, a physical therapy doctor, tweeted a clip calling it a “brutal injury.”

“Often seen in MMA using the shin block on leg kicks,” he wrote.

According to NBC News, Lions coach Dan Campbell said Hutchinson underwent immediate surgery at a Dallas-area hospital for a broken tibia.

“He’s in good hands at the moment. He’s taken care of,” Campbell said during a postgame press conference. “He will stay here. Obviously he’s going to be out for a while. It’s hard to lose someone like him, but we’ll know a lot more after this.”

The Lions won the game 47-9. Members of the defense dedicated their victory to Hutchinson.

“We know how much Hutch means to this team, just to this defense. He sets the tone and to see him go down like that… you don’t want that from us… we all knew we had to. “Do it for Hutch,” Brian Branch said after the game.

“It’s really hard. “He was a guy who was part of the heartbeat of this team – a leader who does everything right, a great teammate,” Lions quarterback Jared Goff said. “He’s everything you want in a player and teammate and to see him go down like that and be visibly upset is hard on all of us. He’ll be fine and he’ll get back on his feet.

Where is your shin?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the shinbone, or tibia, is the second-longest bone in your body.

“It plays an important role in how one stands, moves and maintains balance,” the clinic explained, adding that they typically only emerge after “severe trauma” such as car accidents.

It is the larger of the two bones in the lower legs, the other being called the fibula, also called the fibula.

“The shinbone extends from just below your knee to your ankle,” the clinic reported. “It is closer to the inside of your body (medially) than the fibula.”

How hard is it to break your shinbone?

“Because it is so strong, it usually takes severe trauma, such as a fall or car accident, to fracture your tibia,” the Cleveland Clinic wrote.

But while injuries from serious collisions can lead to fractures, so can sports injuries, reports the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

“Sports injuries, such as a fall while skiing or a collision with another player while playing soccer, are lower-energy injuries that can cause fractures of the tibial shaft. These fractures are typically caused by a rotational force and result in an oblique or spiral fracture,” the group explained.

Treatment of a tibia fracture

Fractures of the tibia often require surgery to repair the bone and physical therapy to regain strength, experts point out.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, most of these fractures take between four and six months to fully heal, although some may take longer.
