Local sports teams compete for LINK nky’s Team of the Week

To become the winning team, the votes of fans play an important role, along with the consideration of our sports team here at LINK.

Nominations are submitted by the reader or recommended by our sports team. Our Team of the Week program is honored all local sports all Regardless of whether it is a youth or adult-oriented leisure activity, whether in high school or college, whether professional or amateur.

The new school year has expanded the awards program. OrthoCincy Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and LINK nky We are pleased about the expansion of the program. In addition to the weekly winners, the program will feature three Team of the Season winners and one overall Team of the Year winner for the 2024-25 sports season.

New to the program this year is the addition Team of the season (TOTS) And Team of the Year (TOTY) Awards. For purposes of this awards program, sports seasons are considered fall, winter and spring. At the end of each sports season, an overall ranking is made TOTS The winner will be selected from all previous ones TOTW Winner of this season. Your school will also receive a $500 scholarship, which will be awarded to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.

Finally the program ends with the selection of a program TOTY of the three TOTS Prize winner. Online and print articles will again be published, a large commemorative plaque will be presented, and the school will receive an additional $500 scholarship, which will be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.

The call for nominations, voting and announcement of winners will follow the same format as the TOTW.

CONNER BOYS SOCCER

With a 3-1 win over Ryle on Oct. 10, the Cougars won their first 33rd District title since 2019, ending Ryle’s four-year reign as district champion.

To get there, they defeated Cooper 3-0 in the district semifinals.

In the two games of the tournament, Grady Noble scored three goals, Brayden Thornton, Dallas Marshall and Kellen Faulkner also scored. Thornton registered two assists, while Faulkner, Mason Ginn and Trey Wagner recorded one assist each.

Wagner made 13 saves and only allowed one goal in the two games.

Noble was named tournament MVP, while Wagner and Thornton made the All-Tournament team.

The Cougars qualified for the regional tournament and faced St. Henry at home on Tuesday.

CONNER GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Cougars are district champions for the first time since 2021 after defeating Boone County 8-0 in the semifinals and Cooper 1-0 in penalty kicks in the championship.

It was a dramatic finale, with the Jaguars and Cougars needing more time to determine the winners. Conner won in the shootout, while tournament MVP Ally Welch saved the seventh penalty to secure the victory.

Izelee Kerns and Cayley Eilers were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Conner begins its 9th Region Tournament run Monday night at home against Newport Central Catholic. They enter the tournament with a record of 20-2-1 and have eliminated opponents in 18 of those games.

HIGHLANDS VOLLEYBALL

It was an exciting week for the Highlands volleyball team. After 2-0 wins over Campbell County and Bellevue, they traveled to Lexington for the Halloween Smash and went 5-1.

They earned victories over Ashland Blazer (twice), Montgomery County, Tates Creek and Lafayette.

The team leaders this season are Sydney Schomaker with 406 kills, Bella Thomas with 79 blocks, Ella Cox with 528 assists, Hayden Gessner with 401 digs and Liz Perkins with 44 aces.

Highlands is 26-8 this season and closes out the regular season this week with a pair of road games against Beechwood and Cooper on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

CAMPBELL COUNTY GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

The Campbell County girls cross country team won a tough battle at the NKAC/St. Henry meets Saturday at Idlewild Park in Burlington.

The Camels scored 42 points and edged out Ryle by six points to clinch the title.

Olivia Holbrook and Lila Dunlevy placed in the top three, with Holbrook in second place with a time of 18:41 and Dunlevy in third place with a time of 19:00. Aidan Christopher took sixth place (20:01), Brooklyn Phelps took 14th place with a PR time of 20:24. Rounding out the rankings was Katherine McKee in 17th place (20:37). Arianna Law (21:50) placed 31st, Isabella Evers placed 47th in a PR time of 23:15.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC FOOTBALL

Beating your rival 26 times in a row doesn’t make it much of a rivalry, does it?

That’s probably what the Thoroughbreds are wondering after beating Newport again on Friday, 35-7.

NewCath dominated from start to finish, holding the Wildcats to less than 100 yards of offense until the final drive of the game, when the score was 35-0. Kaleb Cole carried the load, scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 102 yards on 18 carries. Emmanuel Miles and Eddie Bivens also had success in the running game, combining for 114 yards and a touchdown, giving the Thoroughbreds 251 rushing yards in the contest.

NewCath’s defense forced two turnovers and sacked the quarterback five times. Louie Collopy hit all five of his extra point attempts.

The Thoroughbreds are now 4-3 this season with an away game in Dayton on Friday.
