  • “Terrifier 3” won the box office this weekend.
  • “Joker: Folie à Deux” suffered one of the biggest drops in history in its second weekend.
  • A sequel is in development for “The Wild Robot,” which is doing well at DreamWorks.

It turns out that audiences want to see a sequel in which a clown wreaks havoc… just not the big-budget studio version.

A major triumph for both independent filmmaking and the horror genre, the clown slasher film “Terrifier 3” topped the domestic box office with an impressive $18.3 million.

At a time when games like “Deadpool & Wolverine” cost more than $200 million, that might not seem like a large sum, but considering “Terrifier 2” was made for $5 million, that’s still a big win.

And it comes as the other clown currently on screens continues to be a huge disappointment. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” even with a budget of around $190 million, suffered an 81% drop in profits this weekend, one of the worst in comic book history and films in general.

After opening last week to an already disappointing $37.6 million, Todd Phillips’ sequel dropped to $7.05 million despite playing on more than 4,000 screens (for comparison: “Terrifier 3.” “ ran to 2,514).

What is behind the success of “Terrifier 3”?

The indie horror film series, directed by Damien Leone, stars David Howard Thornton as Art, a demonic clown figure who terrorizes a small town with grisly murders.

While he usually strikes on Halloween, in “Terrifier 3” he appears at Christmas, dressed as Santa Claus but still with murder on his mind.

But despite all the blood and violence, the films have developed a cult following and show no little skill at classic marketing tactics, such as setting up a hotline for outraged viewers to denounce the content.

Additionally, much less was spent on advertising to appeal to horror fans and keep the budget down.

DreamWorks has reason to celebrate as family animated film “The Wild Robot” took second place, earning $13.45 million in its third weekend.

The new film was so successful that director Chris Sanders, who wrote and directed based on Peter Brown’s book, is making plans for a sequel to the story of Roz the robot (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o) and the animals makes friends on a remote island.

“Folie à Deux” had to settle for third place due to its dismal results. Warner Bros. will be happier with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which slipped to fourth place with $7 million but has been in theaters for six weeks and is now available to watch at home on VOD.

Pharrell’s LEGO-animated life story “Piece by Piece” struggled to resonate with audiences, grossing $3.8 million, ahead of Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” and the Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice.” “, which grossed $4.1 million with $1.58 million in seventh and tenth place.

Director Damien Leone has said he has plans for at least a few more films, so we haven’t heard the last part of Art the Clown yet. Maybe Warner Bros. should consider taking over this franchise if it’s looking for a successful franchise?
