The Authority: James Gunn Delivers Cryptic Update on DC Movie – Comic Book Movies and Superhero Movie News

James Gunnthe co-head of DC Universe, recently gave a cryptic update on “The Authority,” a superhero film that is reportedly part of the first chapter of the new franchise: “Gods and Monsters.” The project is an adaptation of the comic book superhero team of the same name Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, created for DC Comics. Gunn and his DCU co-leader Peter Safran originally announced this in January 2023.

James Gunn suggests the agency’s script is “in development.”

When Gunn answered a fan question via his official Threads account about whether The Authority was in pre-production or currently dormant, he said, “Those aren’t the only two options.”

He added: “Some scripts are IN DEVELOPMENT, either looking for writers or currently being written or rewritten. When the scripts are completed and ready to be created, they are given the green light and then IN PRODUCTION.”

When another fan asked if it was safe to assume that the rest of the projects on the announced list were in development, Gunn replied, “Yes.” This excludes David Corenswet’s Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as the former is currently in post-production. Meanwhile, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the only other DCU project currently in pre-production alongside Lanterns, Gunn confirmed.

In January 2023, Gunn described The Authority as one of his “real passion projects”. He elaborated: “I’ve been working really hard with the writers on this, we’re starting to put the whole story together. […] This is a great film. […] I don’t know how many of you are familiar with WildStorm’s authority characters. WildStorm was a comic imprint that was purchased by DC that I really love. We’re bringing a lot of these WildStorm characters into the DCU.” (via Collider)

Gunn also said at the time that the agency would have a connection to Superman. “It’s about using these known properties to lead to lesser-known properties,” he explained. (via Deadline)

“The Authority” does not yet have an official release date, no official director, and no official screenwriter. Other Chapter One films currently in development include The Brave and The Bold and Swamp Thing.
