Meza’s late tiebreaker extends Texas State-The University Star’s unbeaten streak

Sophomore midfielder, Victoria Mezascored the game-winning goal to break a 2-2 tie and give Texas State Soccer a victory over the University of Louisiana Monroe on Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

The win gives the Bobcats now ten straight undefeated games.

From kickoff, both teams adopted an energetic tone that resulted in 28 fouls, 15 for the Warhawks, 13 for the Bobcat and six yellow cards throughout the game, three for each team.

“When you’re in the moment, things can get heated, but that’s why we have our players on the bench and they help us stay calm and remind us that we’re playing for the team,” the fifth-year midfielder said of the US state of Texas. Mya Ulloa said. “You don’t have to deal with the players, even if they physically act the way we want to win, we need everyone.”

Texas State sophomore midfielder, Kaylie Smithmanaged a goal in the 13th minute, which he completed after a corner sent by Ulloa into the penalty area.

The Warhawks made five shots, three of which came from Texas State’s second-year goaltender, Caitlyn Draper held to hold ULM scoreless in the first half.

Early in the second period, Ulloa sent a penalty kick into the bottom right corner in the 52nd minute, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

In the 56th minute, the Warhawks responded to their 2-0 deficit. An attack from Mara Grutkamp ended with a goal to make it 2-1.

“[Draper] made some big savings today; She was solid,” the Texas State head coach said Steve Holeman said. “They scored a nice goal in the first one, low at the back post. I don’t think anyone could have saved that, but yeah, she was good; She handled the game well.”

The Warhawks struck again late in the game by scoring Giulia Francowhich tied the game 2-2 in the 77th minute.

A corner kick in the 82nd minute led to a successful shot by Meza that finally secured the Bobcats’ victory, winning the game 3-2 and moving Texas State to No. 1 in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference.

The Bobcats will head out looking to extend their winning streak against Old Dominion University.

Kickoff for the game between Texas State and Old Dominion is scheduled for Friday, October 18th at 6 p.m Old Dominion Soccer Complex in Norfolk, Virginia. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
