Three injured, two seriously, after gas leak at Hillcrest, Auckland, daycare center

The children were the focus throughout the entire ordeal.

A parent told this Herald The center had called the parents to inform them of the incident. Parents arrived at 2 p.m. to pick up their children and bring them home early.

Northern Department of Education director Isabel Evans said the incident was attended to by FENZ and St John Ambulance.

“Center management handled this isolated incident in accordance with their emergency management protocols.

“Three members of staff were taken to North Shore Hospital following a small gas leak from a fridge. No children were affected.”

FENZ had continued to operate the center as usual and support staff had been brought in.

“Our Traumatic Incident Team will provide you with support for as long as necessary.”

A St. John spokesman said one person in moderate condition and two people in serious condition were being transported to North Shore Hospital.

Firefighters outside the Caterpillars to Butterflies Early Childhood Center respond to a gas leak that sent teachers to the hospital for treatment.

They said St. John responded with two rapid response units, four ambulances and a dispatcher.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said they responded to the leak with two fire engines.

Nearly two hours after the incident, all St. John vehicles had left the scene, but four police cars remained.
