Neighbors call for more security after fatal shooting at flag football game

MILWAUKEE – Neighbors next to MPS South Stadium are calling for more security and police in the area after a man was shot during a youth flag football game Saturday.

“Every time there is a soccer game, there is a heavy police presence in the area,” said Luvia Montoya, a neighbor. “This is quite worrying, in the middle of the day during a children’s game.”

Milwaukee police said a 47-year-old man was shot shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday and taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) said the incident occurred Saturday during a youth flag football game at South Stadium.

Karen Rodriguez lives across the street from the stadium. She has a seven-year-old child and is ready to move because she feels unsafe.

“I have a small child, a seven-year-old. It’s sad. It’s a friendly football game. They have football games every week,” said Karen Rodriguez, another neighbor, in disbelief.

Rodriguez said she has been feeling so unsafe lately that she wants to move.

In the hours after the shooting, Milwaukee police initially said a 37-year-old had been arrested, but later determined he was not the suspect in the murder.

As MPD continues to search for unknown suspects, neighbors want more security and police in the area.

“I hope there is more security, more police and maybe even more speed bumps. I hope I can make a change in the next few months,” Rodriguez said.

Some neighbors also call each other.

Luvia Montoya grew up across from MPS South Stadium. She said this year it was crazy seeing police at every football game.

“There needs to be a lot more engagement in the community, with leaders, with the police. There needs to be more conversations,” Montoya said.

TMJ4 reached out to MPS on Sunday to ask if South Stadium has metal detectors or security guards at extracurricular activities like flag football. A district spokesman said they would review the issue on Monday.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers.
