EAST RUTHERFORD – This was one of those games that can change the perception of a season.

The Giants simply couldn’t finish the job.

In the second half they were aggressive when needed. The defense was excellent at containing Joe Burrow and the strong Cincinnati Bengals offense.

But in the end, the Giants failed to gain control of the game. Daniel Jones’ fourth pass to Darius Slayton was deflected by Bengals cornerback DJ Turner and there was a chance for their second straight upset win, although they lost 17-7.

The Bengals (2-4) entered the race as favorites despite their record, and the Giants could have come out on top in the NFC East race with Dallas and Washington losing on Sunday and Philadelphia coming here next Sunday in Saquon Barkley’s return to MetLife Stadium .

The Giants (2-4) have struggled for respect. They have struggled to convince others that the 2024 season isn’t over after another 0-2 start.

The performance on Sunday evening was again about missed opportunities. Greg Joseph hit a 47-yard field goal wide of the left net that would have tied the score early in the fourth quarter. The Giants missed another chance for Joseph that would have come from more than 50 yards, and Jones couldn’t hit Slayton.

On the Bengals’ final drive, Burrow hit Princeton’s Andrei Iosivas for 29 yards on a third-and-12. A stop here and the Giants get another chance on offense. Then came the hardest thing to accept: Micah McFadden took the ball away from Bengals defender Chase Brown, and the fumble splashed onto the turf, away from safety Jason Pinnock, toward the sideline and then with it after the two-minute warning 1 out. 58 left.

One play later, Brown had a 30-yard touchdown run. Ball game.

Here’s our analysis from the entire game:

Greg Joseph’s 47-yard field goal goes wide left as the Giants miss an opportunity to tie. Brian Daboll tried on fourth down early in the possession and they converted, but the drive stalled when a third down pass from Daniel Jones was negated at the line by former Giant BJ Hill.

Dexter Lawrence was in the middle of two big plays for the Giants as they forced the Bengals to settle for a field goal. Cincinnati took the lead, but it could have been bigger. Lawrence drew a holding penalty that negated a Chase Brown touchdown run. On the next play, Lawrence sacked Joe Burrow – his seventh of the year – to force the field goal.

The Giants offense finally found the end zone and it was an uphill battle. No matter, as Tyrone Tracy Jr. fights his way into the end zone from a yard out to cap a 16-play drive in which the Giants converted two fourth-down plays.

Maybe Brian Daboll knew something. He trusted his defense after making the failed fourth attempt on his own territory, and Big Blue rewarded his decision. Bobby Okereke forced a fumble from Zack Moss and Micah McFadden recovered. Can the Giants offense find the end zone and make a game out of it?

It’s one thing to play to win. The Giants tried fourth-and-2 from their own 38, and Daniel Jones’ throw over the uprights to Wan’Dale Robinson was canceled out by Mike Hilton. The Bengals and Joe Burrow are in business.

BENGAL

Passing: Joe Burrow 9-15, 87 yards

Rushing: Burrow 2-57, touchdown; Chase Brown 5-13; Zack Moss 4-9

Reception: Tea Higgins 4-48; Ja’Marr Chase 2-19; Brown 1-11; Andrei Iosivas 1-7; Moss 1-2

GIANT

Passing: Daniel Jones 8-16, 81 yards, INT

Rushing: Jones 5-37, Tyrone Tracy 3-3, Eric Gray 2-7

Receiving: Tracy 3-33, Wan’Dale Robinson 2-22, Darius Slayton 2-20, Jalin Hyatt 1-6

The Giants defense is on the ball. The offense and Daniel Jones are fighting. Still, it’s a game. Can the Giants score a touchdown at home? They haven’t done that yet this season.

You can’t do that, Daniel Jones. He was beaten by BJ Hill after missing his hot shot, Tyrone Tracy, who was open, trying to throw the ball up. The result: unfortunate. The duck landed straight into the waiting arms of Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt. The Giants were looking for a possible game-winning score.

Bengals 7, Giants 0:11:32 left in first quarter

The Giants had to be wary of Joe Burrow’s right arm. Instead, Burrow crushed them with his legs on the first drive of the game. Facing a third-and-18 after a sack by Brian Burns, Burrow took advantage of the Giants’ over-aggressive pursuit on the left side, found scoring space and dashed 47 yards for a stunning touchdown.

The Giants had all the momentum. The building shook.

And just like that, the Bengals had the lead. Perhaps it’s an omen, considering the Giants were down 7-0 early in each of their two wins.

Wrote all about Daniel Jones’ 1-14 prime-time record earlier this week, breaking down the results from his rookie season. His poor play at home is also a concern, dating back to the game against the Colts in 2022 where fans chanted his name. The Giants are 0-2 at MetLife this season and the offense has not scored a touchdown in Jones’ last four home starts.

NY Giants vs. Bengals injury updates

The Giants will be without leading receiver Malik Nabers (concussion protocol) and leading rusher Devin Singletary (groin) for the second straight week. That puts pressure on Darius Slayton and rookie Tyrone Tracy, who both managed over 100 yards against the Seahawks.

The Giants will turn to Azeez Ojulari to partner Brian Burns at outside linebacker, with Kayvon Thibodeaux placed on injured reserve Saturday following wrist surgery. Thibodeaux will miss at least four games.

The Giants have also signed player Matt Haack while Jamie Gillan is out with a hamstring injury. Haack handles punting and holding for field goals and point-after-touchdown kicks. They didn’t want to risk a special teams injury that struck them again in Week 1 with Gunner Olszewski (groin) and in Week 2 with Graham Gano (groin/hamstring).

RBs Chase Brown (quadriceps) and Zack Moss (foot) are expected to play for the Bengals. Brown is listed as questionable. CB Mike Hilton (knee) participated fully in practice this week but is listed as questionable.

NY Giants vs Bengals prediction

The choice: Giants 28, Bengals 24

Here’s why: Talk about momentum shifts. If ever that really mattered in the NFL, this is a week where everything points to the Giants having their best performance in a long time at home. How much do the Bengals have left in the tank to overcome a shocking overtime loss to the Ravens? They definitely have the weapons to make the Giants pay all over the field, but we’re going to be close against Big Blue in this game. This team has gotten better every week, and that’s half the battle in this league.
