“OMG” by Mets’ Iglesias huge hit for Spotify users in New York

The rise in popularity for OMGthe Mets’ anthem, hit a record high during the team’s playoff run, according to Spotify, the world’s largest music service, which shared some exclusive data Sportico.

OMG, is, of course, the brainchild of versatile infielder Jose Iglesias, who records music under the name Candelita (“little candle” in Spanish). Iglesias may have been the most underrated signing in all of baseball this season after being called up from Triple-A Syracuse in May. It wasn’t just the poor numbers (.337/.381/.448) or the substitution of Jeff McNeil at second after the starter’s wrist injury. While he cooled off a bit in the postseason — just six hits in 29 at-bats — his song hasn’t.

The song reached its highest streaming day on Spotify in the New York tri-state area on October 4, a day after the Mets dispatched the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Series. Water flows in the region have essentially quadrupled and increased by 395%. Also on October 9, a day after the Mets defeated the rival Philadelphia Phillies and secured the Division Series, the number of listeners to the song increased by 70%.

This isn’t just a postseason phenomenon, as Mets fans — many of whom may have already been fans of Latin pop music — turned up the volume after key regular-season wins.

On September 30, the day after the regular season ended, Spotify streams in the NYC region increased by 165%. (The Brewers must really hate the song because the Mets beat them to stay in the running for a Wild Card shot.) The Spotify streams grew even more the next day, October 1st – by 185% – after the Mets split a controversially postponed doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves to make the playoffs.

The song also inspired staying power for the crosstown rival Yankees, as its streams increased 125% on July 25, a day after the Mets won the four-game Subway Series.

Iglesias began to use OMGa previously unreleased song he composed in the 2023 off-season as his accompanying music. The Mets, a mediocre team in a highly competitive NL East, were able to pick up a few wins thanks to Iglesias’ bat, and his teammate JD Martinez suggested as much OMG the team’s anthem.

The newly christened anthem also performed well outside of Citi Field OMG reached number 1 billboards July Latin Digital Song Sales Survey. Iglesias performed the song twice during the season; once in late June after a home win over the Houston Astros and a few weeks later at the Home Run Derby during the MLB’s All-Star festivities.

According to Luminate, OMG sDuring the week of June 29th to July 4th, there were just over 1,000 downloads in the US. Expect the song to do even better after a remix of the track, first released on Friday, featuring superstar artist and sudden college football player Pitbull.

On Sunday night in Los Angeles, the New York Mets begin their first National League Championship Series since 2015 and their seventh in franchise history. They do so not only with the bats of Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, but also with the spirit of a journeyman having a career year on and off the field.
