Navasota man wanted for murder is arrested by Texas A&M police

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A Navasota man charged with murder in Harris County was arrested in the Northgate area this weekend during a traffic stop by Texas A&M police.

Texas A&M police said they stopped Alexander Barrientos just before 2 a.m. for an expired vehicle registration and no insurance.

During the stop, A&M police learned that Barrientos, who is not an A&M student, was wanted in Harris County on murder and vehicle charges. He was arrested Sunday morning and taken to the Brazos County Detention Center without incident.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Barrientos, 22, was involved in a high-speed chase in April that ended in a crash that killed the passenger in his vehicle.

Officials say Barrientos was caught speeding in a 2006 GMC Sierra on Highway 290 in Harris County on the night of Saturday, April 13th.

A constable deputy with Harris County Pct. The No. 5 Office attempted to stop Barrientos, but he reportedly eluded law enforcement and drove at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour while weaving around several other vehicles on the highway. The pursuit lasted approximately 4 miles before Barrientos struck another vehicle and then crashed into a utility pole.

The impact killed the passenger in the vehicle, Hector Ramirez.

Barrientos and the driver of the other vehicle that was struck had only minor injuries.

Court documents show Barrientos was arrested after the pursuit in Harris County but was released on $95,000 bail.

According to the Harris County District Clerk’s Office, his next court date was scheduled for Nov. 19.
