We live in time Star Andrew Garfield revealed the chaotic birth sequence from his non-linear romantic dramedy, in which a week-old baby poops on his hand, creating an action movie feel in which his self-described scene partner is co-star Florence Pugh’s bottom.

In a new interview with The New York Times Garfield, who focuses on creating one of the A24 film’s most hectic scenes, explained that there was a lot at stake during filming.

“It’s the big action event,” said the Oscar-nominated actor. “It’s the Indiana Jones sequence.”

In the film, which traces the year-long romance between Garfield’s earnest salesman Tobias and Pugh’s wisecracking cook Almut amid illness, career and life milestones, traffic jams, unfortunate timing and the lack of better options force a job in a gas station bathroom. To properly portray the scene, director John Crowley, inspired by screenwriter Nick Payne’s worries about his wife’s birth, recreated a gas station toilet on a soundstage, where filming lasted two days and was shot a total of eight times.

Although a doll was used for blocking, a few weeks old baby was brought in for the final moment after the successful birth, which also included two comical workers (played by scene-stealers Nikhil Parmar and Kerry Godliman).

Garfield didn’t interfere with the baby’s natural bodily functions, saying, “Honestly, those moments were the best because you just thought, ‘Oh God, this is life, what a privilege.'”

While The Social network The actor said he didn’t want to feel too informed at the start of the scene because Tobias felt overwhelmed at that moment. He was careful and deliberate about the overall intimacy of the scene that he and Pugh subsequently worked through together.

“I mostly played with Florence’s butt,” Garfield said. “So I really wanted to make sure she felt safe and cared for and cared for.”
