All-Arizona Quad Meet

Arizona State dominated the first quad meet between the four Arizona Division I swimming programs. The men went 2-0 on the day and the women went 3-0, remaining undefeated through the start of the 2024-25 season.

Men’s meeting

Ilya Kharun continues to be on fire this season. After standout performances in the Sun Devils’ matchup against UNLV – including a 200 fly in 1:39.47 – the sophomore turned in another strong performance in the unconventional meet, which featured the 600 freestyle and 100 IM as well as the 200 fly 50s and 150s strokes went.

We have already seen this season Hubert Kos Add his name to the all-time top 10 list in the 100 IM and Kharun didn’t miss his chance in the event, clocking a speed of 46.91. According to our records, this is the third fastest 100 IM run in history, making Kharun only the third man to hit the 47-second mark Shaine Casas (46.33) and Leon Marchand (46.63).

Kharun also impressed at home in his butterfly competitions. He swam a 19.94 50-yard fly, which appears to be the second fastest 50-yard flat start. Kharun opened his individual events with the 150 fly, winning in 1:12.29. That’s faster than his first 150 yards on his 200 fly PB from last season; There his time in the first 150 yards was 1:12.86.

The Sun Devil men had no shortage of event winners on Saturday. Kharun led the group with three but senior players Patrick Sammon and freshmen Lucien Vergnes each took two wins. Sammon won the 150 freestyle in 1:07.24 with a one-two finish Jonny Kulow. Sammon then won the 300-meter freestyle race, besting the Wildcat freshman Tomas Lukminas (2:30.76).

Verges, a freshman from France, led a 1-2-3-4 Sun Devil finish in the 50 backstroke, swimming 21.75. He is primarily a breaststroke specialist and took victory in the 150m breaststroke with a swim time of 1:24.07.

Reece Grady (600 free, 5:22.73), Tommy Palmer (50 free, 19.83) and Jono Adam (150 back, 1:14.64) also contributed to event wins for the Sun Devils.

It wasn’t just the Sun Devils though – the Arizona Wildcats were able to pick up three event wins of their own, leading to a split meet. They lost to ASU but triumphed over GCU. Arizona won both the men’s and women’s 1-meter dash Gage DuBois He scored 330.45 points and led the men. Back in the pool, junior Bryan Wong won the 300 IM in 2:52.48 and senior Daniel Young completed the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 24.10.

Women’s meeting

To open the meet, the Sun Devils sent out their school record holders in the 200-meter medley relay:Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ulmann, And Caroline Bentz– to take on the 400 meter medley relay. The quartet swam a time of 3:34.09, with Sheehan once again coming close to the 100-meter school record with a time of 52.64 in the opening section. The time is 1.23 seconds shy of the Sun Devils’ best time from last season (3:32.86), in which four different swimmers competed.

As with the men, there was an abundance of tournament winners on the women’s side as eight different women touched the wall first for the Sun Devils. Alexa Reyna And Deniz Ertan each had two wins. Sophomore Reyna picked up her first win by defeating Ertain in the 600-meter freestyle, swimming 5:43.08. Ertan won the 150m fly (1:25.84), then the pair took the win in the 300m freestyle with a time of 2:46.40. There, Charli Brown drove a time of 2:46.74 and finished just behind the winning duo.

After winning the first medley relay, Sheehan won the 50 backstroke in 24.29 minutes, taking a one-two lead over fellow ACC transfer Bentz, who in turn won the 150 backstroke (1:22.78). She then took second place in the 50 fly behind newcomer Ulmann with 24.18 to 24.29.

Elli Straume (150 free, 1:18.73), Sonia Vaishnani (300 IM, 3:05.24) and Zoe Summar (150 breaststroke, 1:36.22) picked up the other event victories for the Sun Devils as the women went 3-0 on the day.

Arizona won the women’s and men’s 1-meter plank and the 50-meter breaststroke. For women, 50 breasts, Eleni violence took the win for the Wildcats (9/28). Brooke Earley scored 307.80 points and placed first in the 1-meter dash as Arizona lost to ASU but won against Grand Canyon and NAU. NAU didn’t win any events, but their strength gave the 11-time defending WAC champion the opportunity to beat GCU 144-137.

Grand Canyon picked up two event victories. Elisa Corradi won the 100 IM and senior Maria Brunlehner took the only Grand Canyon victory of the day with a swim time of 22.57, winning the 50m freestyle ahead of Arizona Lexi Duchscherer.
