Barack Obama names his best NBA starting position at No. 5

The Netflix series From 5 Premieres October 9th. The 10 episodes released are between 40 and 62 minutes long. The Netflix series follows five notable NBA players during the 2023-24 season: Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum.

According to Netflix, Starting 5 is produced by LeBron James’ company UNINTERRUPTED in association with Omaha Productions and Higher Ground Productions. Omaha Productions was founded by legendary quarterback Peyton Manning. Higher Ground Productions was founded in 2018 by former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama. Barack is an executive producer for From 5.

He was recently asked who would be in his all-time NBA starting lineup and he gave his answer.

Start 5 includes 3 players who are still active

Obama’s all-time starting five consists of five greats. There are no decisions that can be considered terrible. His backcourt includes Stephen Curry at point guard and Michael Jordan at shooting guard. His all-time starting lineup consists of LeBron James at small forward, Kevin Durant at power forward and Hakeem Olajuwon at center.

The former president’s list includes Curry, the best three-point shooter of all time as a point guard. These include the two players most frequently mentioned in GOAT conversations: Jordan and James. Obama is a known Chicago Bulls fan, so it would have been shocking if he didn’t include Jordan in his starting lineup. Durant is a four-time scoring champion and won two championships with the Golden State Warriors. Olajuwon’s Houston Rockets won back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. There is plenty of offense with these five players.

Two of the players were also named Defensive Player of the Year. Olajuwon won the award in consecutive seasons of 1992–93 and 1993–94. Not many guards have won the award, but Jordan did in 1987-88. Many believe James was robbed in 2012-13 when he finished second to Marc Gasol. So Obama wasn’t just focused on bringing in the best scorers in league history (although all five of those players could/can score at will).

Commentators trash other names in Obama’s X post

Of course, the comments section on his X post was polite. There was no mention of politics. Everyone fully agreed with his five decisions. If you think that, you’ve probably never spent a minute on social media.

The most vile and aggressive comments were, of course, about politics, but most of those involving basketball did not involve direct attacks on Obama or anyone else. Commentators wondered why players like Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were not on his list. All of these players certainly have the right to be among the best starting five of all time.

One of the reasons sports can be so great is the endless debates that can be had about them (again, as long as the debates don’t falter). Hypothetical lists like the all-time starting five allow basketball fans to think of players from all eras and decide which five fit together best. Of course, it’s all a matter of opinion, so there will be many different starting fives, including Obama’s.
