Do basic economy flights really save money?

Do basic economy flights really save money?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – With airfares soaring and rising this year, low-cost airlines are more popular than ever.

Frontier, Allegiant and Spirit fill their planes with budget travelers because their fares are often half those of the mainline carriers, especially to popular vacation destinations.

But now the big boys are trying to beat them with their own economy fares.

However, these new tariffs come with some major disadvantages.

With a basic economy ticket you may not be allowed to take more than one small bag, which must fit under your seat.

Using the overhead bin or checking a suitcase can cost up to $60 each way for a one-way economy ticket.

Now add that you cannot select your seat at the time of purchase. You must wait at least 24 hours before your flight until most good seats are taken.

And you don’t earn frequent flyer miles with basic economy tickets.

AirfareWatchdog For this reason, says basic economy seats may not be your best value, even if those fares are $50 cheaper than standard bus fares.

The extras and inconveniences will really add up.

Whether you’re flying with a major discount retailer or a mainline airline that now offers super economy seats, know the downsides before booking so you don’t waste your money.
