Missimo sets the Texas career goals record while Soccer scores three points

BATON ROUGE, La. – And now there is no one in the history of the University of Texas women’s soccer program who has scored more goals during their career than Lexi Missimo after the Longhorns’ 3-1 win at LSU on Sunday.

In Texas’ first game at LSU Soccer Stadium since 2006, Missimo was tied with his teammate Trinity Byars for the most career goals (52) for a student-athlete in program history. And the veteran midfielder from Southlake, Texas, nearly reached the new mark less than 12 minutes into Sunday’s contest.

As several of her teammates caught the attention of several LSU defenders in the 18-yard area, Missimo attempted a shot from the edge of the 6-yard area, but it was blocked. Five minutes later, Missimo seemed to have once again put her name at the top of the record book with an unchallenged shot on goal. But the right-footed shot hit the right wood and bounced off Missmo.

Missimo had one last opportunity to achieve this feat in the first game when she fired a shot in the 30th minute but the ball went wide.

After LSU goalkeeper Audur Scheving parried a Missimo shot six minutes into the second half, the senior made sure her next attempt found the net by beating Scheving on a 1-on-1 opportunity and giving Texas the lead extended to 3-0 just 11 minutes after the start of the second.

Not only was the goal Missimo’s ninth of the season – it was also the second-most scored goals in the history of her college career – it also moved her closer to the 60-goal, 60-assist club that she would join in the next game Texas will enter with 53 career goals and 59 career assists.

BY HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY

“Oh, there was a lot of resilience out there today. As I told the team after the game, it’s all about perseverance, perseverance and resilience, those would be the three words. Despite all the odds, we had to find these qualities. “Every great team has all of these qualities, but we had to bring them to the forefront of them now.”

FROM SENIOR MIDFIELDER LEXI MISSIMO

“Actually, I’m just doing my job for the team. My job is to score goals and provide assists, so I’m just doing my job. I’ve been in an assistant era for the last few games, but now I’m trying to get back to the goalscoring era of my game. But when it comes to an assist or a goal, I’m just happy that we were able to get the win while I play my role in the team.”
