Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital offers free vein exams

Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital will host a free vein exam on Monday, October 28, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Mon Health Vein Care Center on the first floor of the hospital.

This from Dr. Ferdinand C. Martinez’s screening is designed to help patients assess the health of their veins and determine whether further care is needed. During the screening, participants watch a short video and hear a presentation from Dr. Martinez before receiving an individual ultrasound exam.

The ultrasound results will indicate whether the patient should return for a more detailed examination.

Varicose veins, a common condition affecting over 30 million Americans, will be a focus of the investigation. Despite its prevalence, fewer than 2 million people seek treatment. Varicose veins occur when the venous valves fail and the blood flows back and the veins enlarge. This condition, also called venous reflux, can cause symptoms such as aching leg pain, rashes, burning or itching skin, fatigue, heaviness, and swelling in the legs. In more advanced cases, patients may experience darkening of the skin, swelling and even ulcers.

“Many people live with unpleasant symptoms of venous disease without knowing that there is an underlying problem that can be treated,” said Dr. Ferdinand C. Martinez. “This screening is an opportunity to assess the health of your veins and take the first step toward relief.”

The goal of this screening is to help patients identify potential vein problems early and improve their quality of life by treating symptoms before they worsen.

Availability for the screening is limited. To reserve a spot, call (304) 517-1272. For more information about Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, visit MonHealth.com/SJMH.
