Archive video shows Vancouver in 1986 during Expo 86

The panorama at the end shows an amazing comparison of what the city looked like back then.

The sights and sounds of Expo 86 disappeared from the city nearly 40 years ago, but they live on in this video featuring archival footage.

A boat patrols the waters off the coast, people eat McDonalds and the historic Engine 374 honks its horn in the video shared by YouTube channel Floating Through the News.

Other scenes include the earliest version of the SkyTrain, the giant hockey stick recently removed from Duncan, and shots of Princess Diana and Prince (now King) Charles riding past a cheering crowd.

The five-and-a-half-minute video also includes several shots of the streets and crowds milling around the False Creek site.

It ends with a shot high above False Creek that provides an amazing view of what the area looked like in 1986 and an amazing comparison to what exists in the area today.

The footage also includes audio from the scenes (without voice-over or music), allowing the audio from the exhibits and outside to permeate, giving an even more immersive version of Expo 86 and allowing for the audio from the exhibits and outside. Conversations can also be heard.

The footage appears to be a B-roll shot during Expo 86; Floating through the News digitizes old, forgotten video material from dead formats and puts it online.
