The “ToothTok” trend brings out the perfect celebrity smile

Smile, you’re on the ToothTok camera.

TikTok dentists are taking a detour to Hollywood and exposing leading ladies and gentlemen for their expensive cosmetic dental treatments.

Many celebrities with incredibly beautiful teeth have reportedly undergone dental treatment to give them whiter, straighter, and more even teeth. While some use their fame and fortune to catch up on much-needed oral health, such as with braces, others choose to shrink their teeth to a minimum and replace them with designer ceramic shapes called veneers.

The curious minds of TikToks often send stars like Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift and Emma Watson to dentists for oral exams via the app and ask them for a “veneer check.”

Dr. Vikas Prinja, aka “The London Dentist,” revealed his theory about the “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” singer allegedly correcting her “crowded front teeth” and “cone-shaped side incisors” with a combination of braces and Veneers.

Elsewhere on TikTok, Dr. Rhona Eskander, owner of the Chelsea Dental Clinic in London, said she believes couture designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham previously underwent a gum lift and received a full set of veneers, which could cost over $3,000 per tooth

Many ToothTok followers agree that Cheryl Cole, singer of British girl group Girls Aloud, has undergone one of the most remarkable dental makeovers.

One measure of a beautiful bouche, Eskander says, is the number of teeth exposed when a patient smiles: Cole’s original smile showed only six unevenly spaced and shaped teeth, but after years in the spotlight, her grin grew to 12 perfect pearly white teeth.

Eskander also said the “Barbie” star’s natural “pointy canines” give him “one of the most beautiful smiles I’ve ever seen.”

“When I performed smile makeovers, patients asked me exactly that.”

Dr. Sam Jethwa, president-elect of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, has seen a similar trend among his patients, he told the Sunday Times.

“A highly trained cosmetic dentist can get a pretty good insight into the cosmetic dental treatment the celebrity received. We carry out these interventions every day, so recognizing them is part of our job,” he said.

“We have moved away from the trend of the bright white Hollywood smile and people are opting for subtle treatments that leave people guessing. I think this contributes to the popularity of celebrity smile transformation videos.”

As cosmetic dentistry becomes more accessible to everyone, other doctors are warning against some expensive and unnecessary treatments.

In a new report, British Dental Association chairman Eddie Crouch told the Sunday Times: “When it comes to emulating their idols, users need to be very wary of DIY ‘hacks’. Some influencers offer self-mutilation instructions to unwary followers.”

Jethwa reported that he saw a popular TikTok user removing his braces “with a spoon – which is, of course, incredibly dangerous.”

“The concern is that these videos are not being monitored by TikTok and TikTok users may be copying dangerous videos like this without realizing the consequences.”
