The Detroit Red Wings, needing roster space, placed Ville Husso on waivers on Sunday.

Husso will find no takers in the final year of a contract worth $4.75 million and a narrow season-opening loss. The Wings were without someone as forward Christian Fischer and defenseman Jeff Petry, both of whom are dealing with upper body injuries, were unavailable for Monday’s game against the Rangers in New York.

Once Husso is free on Monday, the Wings can assign him to the minors and call up someone for the Rangers game.

BLUE LINE BONUS: The Red Wings give Albert Johansson his NHL debut. This is a big deal

After that, they don’t play again until Thursday (also at home, also against the Rangers), so the nomination is likely to be a veteran – someone like Austin Watson, for example.

Marco Kasper, the team’s 2022 first-round pick, used the exhibition season to show he’s NHL-ready, but if the Wings don’t expect to need someone for more than one game, it makes more sense to contact a veteran.

Husso landing on waivers isn’t a great look for the 29-year-old former No. 1 goaltender, but it didn’t help his case either when he allowed four goals on 14 shots in about 25 minutes in Thursday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins . Free agent signing Cam Talbot hit 42 shots in the Nashville Predators’ 3-0 win on Saturday.

Husso has also had an injury-plagued season that limited him to 19 games in the 2023/24 season.
