Incredibly, you can now play Teardown in third person

“You can now play Teardown in 3rd person” is the very short, succinct update from developer Tuxedo Labs released this week for the hugely popular, million-selling game about breaking things and/or Teardown. or breaking into things and stealing the other things you find inside. That’s, to be honest, a remarkably modest way of saying that you’ve fundamentally rebuilt much of your previous first-person video game.

“This also means that there is now a selection of playable characters to choose from, so you can imagine who has been carrying around the sledgehammer this whole time. This new perspective also required building animation support that modders will have access to, as well as the ability to create and share their own custom characters,” it continues.

This is a huge change. As before – and I’m sorry if I’m ruining a bit of video game magic you didn’t know about here – the character you inhabited was a floating invisible camera and a pair of arms or whatever was needed from moment to moment. They didn’t climb things or jump over them or anything like that. Now they can and do. This is a pretty wild update and definitely what they were talking about when we interviewed Tuxedo in 2023 and noted that they were just getting started with teardown.

Reviewer Natalie Clayton called Teardown “an endlessly delightful destruction sandbox” in PC Gamer’s 2022 teardown review. “Teardown isn’t just a tech demo – it’s a window into a world where game worlds are only becoming more dynamic, more physical, more fragile,” she said. “A world that takes the physics of Half-Life 2 and the destructible architecture of Red Faction: Guerrilla and doubles it down – rather than aiming for higher graphical fidelity and increasingly static worlds.”

Teardown also received a PC Gamer Award for Best Sandbox of 2022, where it was described as an “absurd Freeform game about stealing tons of stuff” that “stole our hearts too.”

“The journey to squeeze every ounce of fun out of Teardown begins with the gratifying crumbling of a plaster wall against the force of your sledgehammer and gradually builds until you’re lifting entire apartment complexes with a gravity gun and hurling them into orbit,” he wrote Morgan Park.

Several years and many mods later, Teardown just keeps getting better. You can find Teardown on Steam for $30, although it’s 50% off ($15) through October 17th.
