Austrian emergency vehicle manufacturer Rosenbauer has officially opened the order books for its latest electric fire engine. Get to know the Panther 6×6 electric rescue and firefighting aircraft (ARFF).

Four electric motors power the new 6×6, offering significantly better performance, handling and acceleration than its diesel-powered competitors.

The Rosenbauer Panther 6×6 electric was developed specifically for the special requirements of airport fire departments and rescue services, which must be ready for action at all times in emergencies and be on site as quickly as possible. The new rapid fire fire engine is the next generation of the 4×4 electric fire engine Rosenbauer RT, which has been in development since 2020. Five of these units were deployed in Berlin as part of a pilot development program, a similar unit is already in use in Los Angeles along with two others in Paris. The Parisian duo worked for Groupe ADP at Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airports.

Electric fire truck

“With the Panther 6×6 electric, we want to once again set standards in a product category by combining a powerful, fully electric drive with the highest safety standards in its class,” says Andreas Zeller, Head of Sales at Rosenbauer International. “This innovation not only contributes to many airports’ net zero goals, but also meets our customers’ high performance expectations.”

The electric fire truck can be charged with both alternating current and direct current, so it is always ready for use. The water pumps can be powered by either battery or auxiliary/mains power, so the water runs out first before the juice runs out.

“Through the development of our RT/RTX, we have acquired a great deal of expertise in the area of e-mobility, which we have been able to bring into the development of the Panther 6×6 electric over the last two years.” E-mobility offers many advantages, especially in the fire service sector . With the PANTHER 6×6 electric, airport fire departments all over the world can now take advantage of these advantages,” says Sebastian Wolf, CEO of Rosenbauer International.

Electrek’s take

Due to the short driving distances and the associated extreme loads, airports represent an almost ideal application for battery-electric vehicles.

That’s a good thing too. As demand for fossil fuels for road transportation declines, airports and airlines (which have historically been responsible for about 4% of Earth’s global warming) are becoming a larger and larger part of a rapidly shrinking pie when it comes to fossil fuel emissions .
