Why do the Jaguars play in London twice? Explanation of Jacksonville’s 2024 international schedule

If fans are doing a double take at the Jaguars’ 2024 schedule, you’re reading it right. Jacksonville has not one, but two games in London.

London has become the Jaguars’ second home. No NFL franchise has visited the English scene as often as Jacksonville.

The Jaguars were unsuccessful in their first stop across the pond, losing 35-16 to the Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Chicago rookie QB Caleb Williams shined against a poor Jacksonville defense, scoring four touchdowns in the win.

It was the second straight week with a game on site, with the Vikings previously remaining undefeated with a win over the Jets at Tottenham’s Arena in Week 5.

While Chicago returns to the Windy City fresh from their London win, Jacksonville remains in England for Week 7. The team will “host” the Patriots across town for a Week 7 contest at Wembley Stadium, the third and final game on the London schedule.

So what about back-to-back London games for the Jaguars? The Sporting News explains why Jacksonville plays in the UK two weeks in a row.

Why do the Jaguars play in London twice?

No NFL team has played in London as often as the Jaguars, as Jacksonville is rooted in English NFL culture.

The upcoming second clash in 2024 marks the 13th time that Jacksonville will take part in a game in the UK. The Jaguars have had mixed results in global play, with a loss to the Bears in Week 6 dropping their international record to 6-6.

Jacksonville owner Shad Khan has ties to the country. He is the owner of London-based Fulham FC, a football club in the Premier League, England’s top tier of professional football.

The Jaguars are currently in the final year of a three-year deal and play in London every year. However, a new contract is expected to be reached in 2025.

Khan has a number of agreements with the English Football Association dating back to 2012, when the NFL first explored the idea of international games. Since then, the Jaguars’ English fan base has grown, making them an ideal candidate to play twice in one season.

“Seeing the Jacksonville Jaguars extend their stay in the UK and play two regular season games here this year is a sign of the Jags’ commitment to continuing to grow their fan base here over the long term,” said NFL General Manager Henry Hodgson UK, in 2023 low season.
