It’s hard to believe, but those coins in your grandparents’ attic are actually treasure. They are invaluable to collectors across the country who are passionate about the unique history and aesthetics of these coins – although they must accept a price tag that sometimes runs into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Of course, if you believe you have rare or high-value coins in your possession, it’s best to take them to a professional collector to have them appraised. And there are some coins you might be particularly excited to see under the microscope.

Here are six coins worth hundreds that are highly sought after by coin collectors.

Boy and Dolphin Coin: 281-240 BC BC

This famous coin comes from ancient Greece. On one side of the coin there is a depiction of a soldier on a horse, on the other side there is a story about the son of Poseidon riding a dolphin sent by his father after a shipwreck. While one might think that a highly sought-after coin from ancient Greece would cost millions of dollars, late last year it was listed by the US Gold Bureau for just $795.

2004 Wisconsin State Quarter with additional sheet

If any organization – other than a numismatic society or other coin collecting group – is skilled at sorting old coins, it’s Goodwill. The Goodwill blog dedicated an article specifically to coins collectors would love and also included the 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter, which is known for a unique flaw – an extra leaf on the corn stalk. Collectors love the special look and rarity of these coins. Today you can find them on eBay for prices around $849.

1914-D Lincoln Wheat Cent

According to Gainesville Coins, the 1914-D Lincoln Wheat Cent in its series had a very low mintage this year. Due to its rarity, this coin is worth at least $175 to collectors.

1916-D Mercury Dime

Minted in 1916, this model, also known as the “Winged Liberty Head Dime,” is as beautiful as it is rare. Gainesville Coins said only 264,000 coins were minted, meaning collectors are especially excited to see this coin featuring the face of the Roman god Mercury. These coins can cost around $800. Precious metals dealer Apmex is currently selling one in near-fine condition for $832.

1921 Peace Dollar

Gainesville Coins called the Peace Dollar a “beloved” model, and given its elegant and inspiring design, it’s not hard to see why. The 1921 coins were designed with a high relief that was nice to look at, but not exactly suitable for everyday use, so the relief had to be lowered. The price of Gainesville Coins was at least $125. Rare Collectibles TV is selling one for almost $240.

US gold coins before 1933

Did you know that gold coins were minted as everyday money before 1933? This was true, and Gainesville Coins said that these coins are 90% pure gold. They are popular with coin collectors and gold investors alike. According to Gainesville Coins, these can cost at least $150.
