The top male tennis stars battled it out in China to win the 13th edition of the Shanghai Masters. The winner joins an illustrious list of big names who have claimed the title since its inception.

Novak Djokovic leads the way with an unbeaten four Shanghai Masters titles, while the now-retired Andy Murray won it three times during his career. Roger Federer did it twice, while Rafael Nadal finished second twice without ever winning the crown himself.

This time 12 months ago it was Hubert Hurkacz who took the field by defeating Andrey Rublev in the final and securing an impressive tournament victory as the 16th seed.

This year’s participants are spurred not only by the prospect of Hurkacz’s title and the 1,000 ranking points that come with it, but also by the eye-popping prize money on offer in China.

Those who made it past the quarterfinals are comfortably in six figures, while the overall winner will push for a million.

Breakdown of Shanghai Masters prize money

Simply getting through qualifying and moving into the first round is enough to guarantee a decent payout, with those who make it past the first hurdle being rewarded with £17,798 for their efforts. A second round exit is worth £26,410 and a third round exit is worth £45,241.

In the latter rounds, elimination in the round of 16 carries a consolation prize of £77,315, rising to £141,617 by the quarter-finals. The losing semi-finalists will take home £248,786 before two competitors battle it out for the big prize in the final.

The Shanghai Masters runner-up will be awarded £447,815, leaving the winner with a whopping £842,045.
