Tour Station Lodge, an unexpected London house

Station Lodge peeks out from among New Malden’s quintessential historic homes, inviting visitors to explore the architecturally unexpected. This new house, designed by architect Andrei Saltykov in south-west London, is certainly unusual – and represents a radical subversion of its region’s residential architecture.

Built on the site of a former garage acquired by the client in 2020, the project is now a single-family home with built-in future-proofing – a “vague initial wish,” the architect explains, to potentially be split into two homes for the owners . Children. In short, the new house was intended to provide comfortable and equal private space for the couple’s two teenagers, as well as space for the family’s extensive art and book collection.

The brief was extensive, but the location was difficult, writes the architect: “The site is a triangle, bounded on two sides by typical suburban terraces (with right of way to an adjacent substation) and on the third side by Motspur Park railway station.” Platform.’

Inside, a large, flowing triple-height living space forms the heart of the home. It is punctuated by a bright red metal staircase, which becomes a central spatial feature and also serves as the main circulation route to the upstairs bedroom block. The bedrooms face the train station and to protect users from noise and protect their privacy, the volume is made of heavy blockwork and slanted windows. A home office area is located at the top.

The interior spaces follow the unusual geometry of the overall composition, which in turn is defined by lighting, traffic and volume regulations. This creates a multi-faceted, gray roof that becomes the defining, immediately recognizable feature of the house.
