Chris Pine’s Dungeons & Dragons film becomes a Netflix hit a year after disappointing at the box office

Even though it may not have performed well at the box office when it was released in 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has secured the 9th spot in Netflix’s top 10 for the week of September 30th to October 6th. According to Screen Rant, the film, which isn’t even available on Netflix in the US, broke the top 10 list of English-language films 3.2 million viewers and 7.2 million viewing hours. The film reached number one in the local charts in Croatia and Serbia.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grantand takes place in the fantasy world of the legendary role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons.

The film grossed $208.1 million and had a budget of $150 million. It missed its break-even point, which was about $375 million.

“Honor Among Thieves” is an award-winning film

Despite its low box office, the film was met with critical acclaim Win a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form) in 2024. The Hugo Awards honor the best works of science fiction and fantasy.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves The streaming success may be due in part to the fact that 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1974 tabletop game co-developed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game itself has evolved over the years and there are several different editions. A annual convention called Gary Con in honor of Gygax, takes place in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where players come together to talk about D&D.

“Why hasn’t anyone done market research before? I think that’s what went wrong: basically people just thought, I don’t want to see a movie about this game. “Why hadn’t anyone asked the public?” Grant said.

Observant viewers of the film may have seen a brief cameo from one of Hollywood’s biggest stars: Bradley Cooper. While preparing for a quest, the main characters Elgin (Pine) and Holga (Rodriguez) stop by to visit Holga’s former husband, a halfling named Marlamain. The former halfling spouse of Holga’s tall, muscular frame was none other than Rocket Raccoon. Bradley Cooper.

A possible sequel?

Pine, who portrayed the lute-playing bard Edgin DarvisIn Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, does not rule out the possibility of a sequel. At a convention this year, Pine said the chances of a continuation were good, but financial factors were a problem.

“I think there’s a really good chance we’ll do another one… and If they can find a financial way to make it work, they will.Pine said.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is streaming in the US on Paramount+, MGM+ and Prime Video.
