Police say 1 person died and 9 were injured in a shooting near Tennessee State University

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) – Authorities say one person is dead and nine others are injured after a shooting near Tennessee State University.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the shooting occurred at Jefferson Street and 21st Avenue North around 5:30 p.m.

The deceased victim was a 24-year-old man. Three victims are juveniles but are expected to survive.

Five other victims were taken to hospitals by ambulance, while others were dropped off in private vehicles.

Kendra Loney, public information officer for the Nashville Fire Department, said the incident “disrupted an otherwise fun day for many people.”

Firefighters were on scene before gunfire erupted due to the homecoming parade, and they initially thought the shots were fireworks.

At least one victim is believed to have been directly involved in the shooting, while others were mere bystanders.
