Oklahoma vs. Texas: series history, results, all-time games

The Red River rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas is one of the best in college football. In the 2024 matchup, No. 1 Texas edged No. 18 Oklahoma, winning 34-3. In Texas and Oklahoma’s first meeting as SEC members, the Longhorns scored 34 unanswered points, totaled 406 yards and forced two fumbles in the win.

The 31-point loss was Oklahoma’s largest since 2022, when it was blown out by Texas 49-0.

Oklahoma vs. Texas: Series History

Texas leads the series 64-51-5. However, OU has been better than .500 since the end of World War II and is 17-8 since 2000. The teams met twice during the 2018 season, the second matchup for the Big 12 title – Oklahoma won 39-27.

Here are some famous games:

1958

Oklahoma had won six straight against the Longhorns and nine of the last ten games through 1958. In Texas head coach Darrell Royal’s second season, the former Oklahoma QB ended the losing streak with a 15-14 upset of the No. 2 Sooners.

1963

For the first time in the series, Oklahoma and Texas met in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Texas went 28-7 and didn’t lose the rest of the season, which ended with a consensus National Championship and a win over Heisman winner Roger Staubach and No. 2 Navy in the Cotton Bowl ended.

1976

Texas coach Darrell Royal accused OU and coach Barry Switzer of spying on practices. As ESPN reported, Royal asked Switzer, assistant coach Larry Lacewell and the suspected spy (Lonnie Williams) to take a lie detector test and that if they passed, he would each donate $10,000 to a charity of his choice.

Eventually, it was discovered that Oklahoma was spying – four years earlier (when Chuck Fairbanks was head coach).

Before the 1976 game, President Gerald Ford visited both Royal and Switzer. There wasn’t much to talk about. In the end, Royal’s final Red River game ended in a 6-6 tie.

1984

UT was No. 1; OU was No. 3.

Oklahoma coach Switzer wore a “Beat Texas” cap and future longtime Texas coach Mack Brown did Earlier Offensive Coordinator. OU led 15-12 late and appeared to potentially make the game-winning interception in the end zone, but it was ruled incomplete. The Longhorns then kicked a field goal to secure a 15-15 tie.

2000

OU’s surprising road to the national championship included a shocking 63-14 win over the Longhorns. Sooners RB Quentin Griffin tied the NCAA record with six rushing touchdowns.

Oklahoma managed 534 total yards compared to 154 yards for Texas. This began a streak of five straight wins in the series. Vince Young had to defeat the Sooners 45-12 on the way to the national title in 2005.

2021

A season after OU beat Texas in a 4OT game, the rivals experienced even more drama. Texas led by 21 points before the No. 6 Sooners scored 25 points in the final quarter to escape with a 55-48 victory and remain undefeated. Caleb Williams took over at QB for Spencer Rattler and had 212 passing yards, while Kennedy Brooks had 217 yards and two scores – including the 33-yard touchdown with just seconds left.
