Several people were injured in a shooting on Jefferson Street in Nashville

Metro Nashville police and first responders were called to the intersection of Jefferson Street and 27th Avenue N. for reports of a shooting just after 5 p.m. Saturday.

Police said on Twitter around 6:30 p.m. that several people were injured and taken to area hospitals. The crime scene was secured, the post said.

Several streets, including sections of Jefferson Street and 26th to 28th Avenues, were closed due to the investigation.

At 5:30 p.m., Tennessee State warned students via text message about an active shooter off campus. TSU described the shooters as a black male wearing a green top and green pants and a black male wearing a black and white top with jeans. They may have been traveling in a Ford Fusion.

Rauf Muhammad, 58, was cooking food for his business when he heard the shots less than 50 yards away on Jefferson Street. He fell to the ground.

“Everyone is having fun, playing music or something. Then all of a sudden you hear like you’re at war somewhere,” Muhammad said.

He said police were at the scene within five minutes.

It’s homecoming week for TSU, and Jefferson Street near campus was busier than usual on Saturday. There was a parade on the street that morning, and the football game started several miles away at 5 p.m Nissan Stadium.
