Hastings Fire and Rescue is hosting an open day

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, Hastings Fire and Rescue is training individuals on fire safety.

This year’s theme was ‘Smoke alarms: make them work for you.’ Anthony Murphy, risk reduction officer, said that in more than half of the house fires in Hastings in recent years the smoke alarms were either not working or not present at all. But the children stole the show with their interest in the craft.

“It’s really great to start at a young age and just give them a fun opportunity to dress up and have some pseudo-life-like experiences,” Murphy said. “Yeah, it kind of got to where everyone in the building cheered as soon as they knocked over the bag. So it was great.

Murphy said smoke detectors increase the chances of survival.
