Will Russell Wilson play in Week 6? Latest Steelers QB injury updates

The Pittsburgh Steelers overhauled the quarterback position in the offseason. They first signed former Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks starter Russell Wilson before trading for former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

The two moves gave the franchise the opportunity to enter training camp at quarterback. During the preseason, the Steelers named Wilson the starting quarterback, but he suffered a calf injury in September and has not appeared in the starting lineup since.

As a starter, Fields was 3-2 this season with 961 passing yards, 44 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns (five passing, three rushing). Wilson finally practiced this week and is active for the first time this season for Pittsburgh’s Week 6 game in Las Vegas. Here’s the latest on his status.

Is Russell Wilson playing this week?

Wilson is active but does not start. He will be the No. 2 quarterback against the Raiders.

“I like what I saw out there, but again, health and rust are two different things,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Friday. “I thought he had a good week showing his health and his ability to protect himself. Now it’s just a process of reacclimation.”

The Steelers play the Raiders on Sunday before playing back-to-back home games against the New York Jets and New York Giants. Pittsburgh has a bye in Week 9.

“I thought he had a good week,” Tomlin said of Wilson. “He has proven his health. Now it’s just a matter of shaking off the rust.”

When did Russell Wilson suffer an injury?

Wilson’s calf injury occurred early in the Steelers’ training camp. He made it worse in September before Week 1.
