ALCS storylines

Yankees: The Yankees are in the ALCS for the second time in three years and fourth time in eight years. But for the first time since 2012, they don’t have to go through the Astros. Houston eliminated the Yankees in the 2017, 2019 and 2022 ALCS. The Astros are already eliminated and the The path to the AL pennant is just as clear for New York as it has been for some time. To compete in their first World Series since 2009, Aaron Judge will need to be better than he was in the ALDS (2-for-13) and Giancarlo Stanton and Gerrit Cole will need to continue their excellence in October. However, the Yankees won’t be able to lean on their bullpen as heavily in the ALCS as they did in the ALDS. The ALDS had an extra day off this year, allowing New York to use backup players Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver in all four ALDS games without overtaxing them. The rest of the bullpen needs some softening up given the tighter schedule in the ALCS.

Guardian: The Guardians are making their first ALCS appearance since 2016, when they won the pennant before losing to the Cubs in the World Series. Cleveland, of course, hasn’t won a World Series since 1948 – the longest such losing streak in the entire MLB. The Guardians relied heavily on their bullpen during the ALDS against the Tigers, using at least five different pitchers in each contest. Cleveland’s rookie manager Stephen Vogt will likely continue this approach against the Yankees.
