Sam Mitchell and Chris Miles release video for Squash NBA TV “Beef”

Things got ugly on NBA television on Friday night. But there apparently are no real problems between Sam Mitchell and Chris Miles, at least from the strange video they posted on social media on Saturday.

Embarrassing moment on NBA TV with Sam Mitchell

During their broadcast highlighting the day’s preseason action, Miles made a joke about salaries that clearly rubbed Mitchell the wrong way. The former coach and player then launched into a minute-long tirade in which he appeared to snap at his co-host, discussing personal matters such as his residence and Miles’ financial situation as the awkward situation continued.

Mitchell even went so far as to reveal Miles’ address in another section, which later turned out to be a false address.

The situation sent social media into a frenzy. It was speculated (and it’s somewhat clear from the clip) that there had been some issues between the two before and that Friday night was not an isolated incident. Mitchell even said, “You need to stop messing with me on national television.”

According to both parties, it was all some kind of joke. On Saturday, a video was posted on social media showing Miles at the front door of Mitchell’s home. The two talk about how there is no argument between them and are all smiles as they try to explain the awkward situation.

The internet didn’t buy it. Many were quick to point out that attempting to smooth over the situation only made things seem more embarrassing, and some suspected that the two were forced to make the video for PR reasons. One person even joked that Adam Silver was behind the camera.

The bizarre situation will certainly be kept in mind, at least from an entertainment perspective. The NBA season is long and this incident occurred during preseason. While it’s unclear whether the NBA TV network plans to keep the two together as co-hosts, there will undoubtedly be an interesting subplot that will attract some attention.

Sam Mitchell’s last coaching job was as an assistant at the University of Memphis in 2019. His last NBA stop was with the Timberwolves in 2015-16, when he became interim head coach.
