“Women’s swimming and diving overtakes Regis in season opener”

BABSON PARK, Mass. –The Babson College women’s swimming and diving team placed first in all 11 events and defeated Regis College 141-39 in the first meet of the season Saturday afternoon at Morse Pool.

With the win, the Beavers start the dual-meet season 1-0, while Regis, which began its season a week ago, drops to 0-2.

First grader Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Julia Netishen (Exeter, NH) led the Beavers with two individual victories each in their collegiate debuts and both swam on a winning relay team. Seniors Audrey Daniels (Santa Monica, California) and Sophia Silver (Fayetteville, NY) and sophomore Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) all earned an individual victory and swam on a winning relay team for the Green and White.

Junior Vangella Randell (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore Nicolette Newsome (Bridgewater, NJ) were also individual champions for the Beavers.
Turhan touched the wall first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:17.18 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.05, and Netishen took first in the 50-meter free in 24.48 seconds and the 100 IM. Meter backstroke in 1:00.64. Silver took first place in the 200 free in 2:10.26, and Racicot won the 100 free in 56.52.

Daniels captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.25 and was second in the 50 freestyle in 25.76 seconds, Randell was the winner in the 500 freestyle in 5:52.84 and second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:59.51, and Newsome won the 1,000 free in 11:51.21 and was second in the 100 with 1:06.64.

First year Martha Gershanok (Closter, NJ), who placed second in the 200 IM race, swam the prelims for both winning relay teams. She was joined by Daniels, Turham and Silver in the winning 200 medley relay, as well as the senior Emily Tran (Longmeadow, Mass.), Racicot and Netishen on the 400 relay squad.

The Beavers also placed second in their first year Maryan Guzman (Norwalk, Conn.) in the 200 free (2:15.78) and 500 free (6:16.61), classmate Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.) in the 100 fly (1:03.63) and 100 breast (1:14.12) and junior Julia Ahn (Fullerton, Calif.) in the 100 free (1:06.10).

The Beavers will be back in the pool with a home game against Bentley on Oct. 26 at noon
