Qualicum Beach is overhauling water management to replace leaky valves and asbestos pipes

The City of Qualicum Beach will reallocate some of the funds allocated to the Rupert Road Water Looping Capital Project to address the replacement of leaking water valves and a section of asbestos cement water main at First Avenue and Rye Road.

The $30,000 reallocation was requested by Finance Director Raj Hayre and approved by council at its regular meeting on October 2nd.

The leaking water valves and asbestos pipe cross were discovered during the planned installation of a speed bump/zebra crossing. There is no budget for replacing the valves and pipes in the 2024-2028 financial plan.

Staff pointed out that it would be prudent to make repairs to leaky valves and replace the air conditioning water line before installing the speed bump/crosswalk and suggested using some funds from the $1.5 million budget for that Rupert Road Water Looping Project approved in 2024-2028 financial plan.
