What is at stake?

Syracuse is off to a strong start in Fran Brown’s first season as coach, playing in its first ACC road game of the season. NC State is trying to turn around an 0-2 start in league play that included shaky defense and upheaval at quarterback, with starter Grayson McCall sidelined by a concussion.

Key match

Syracuse QB Kyle McCord against NC State’s defensive front. McCord is second in the Bowl Subdivision rankings in passing offense (362.8) and passing touchdowns (17). The Ohio State transfer faces a Wolfpack defense that has been a strength for several seasons but has suffered major losses. NC State ranks 119th in the FBS in scoring defense (33.7), having given up 51 against Tennessee and 59 against Clemson before allowing 34 in last weekend’s home loss to Wake Forest. With an average of 1.83 sacks per game, the Wolf Pack is in the middle of the national rankings.

Players to watch

Syracuse: RB LeQuint Allen. Allen was the ACC running back of the week after scoring four touchdowns in a road win against then-first-place UNLV. He scored twice on runs and two on catches en route to 129 all-purpose yards.

NC State: RB Kendrick Raphael. The sophomore has shown flashes in limited work so far, including running 10 times for 48 yards and a touchdown against Wake Forest. That could ultimately pave the way for him to get more work.
