Big bettors are betting huge on WVU as kickoff approaches

The whales speak. There’s a lot of money coming in against West Virginia this morning to pull off the upset against No. 11 Iowa State, as the shift in the money stakes for the game was significant and also changed the line.

EerSports has been tracking funds wagered on the WVU-Iowa State game over the last 48 hours using PFF’s Greenline feature and we’ve seen drastic changes there. On Thursday night, 85% of all bets were placed on the Cyclones. On Friday morning this value fell slightly to 80%. On Friday afternoon, that share fell to 67%. And on Saturday morning the value had even fallen to 58%.

The percentage of tickets has remained relatively the same, meaning smaller bets from casual bettors played a big role at Iowa State, while much larger amounts – on fewer bets – came in much more regularly at West Virginia.

The line has changed slightly as a result. The Mountaineers started as 3.5-point underdogs, and the limit fluctuated between that and three points at the start of the week, rebounded to 3.5 midweek, then dropped back down to three at the time of this story.

Over/Under betting is still heavily biased towards the Over. According to PFF’s Greenline, 97% of all cash bets were placed on the over total, with that line starting at 51 and extending to 53.5.

West Virginia and Iowa State begin tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on FOX.
