Oviya’s career

When Oviya started acting, she played supporting roles in Malayalam films. She was notably involved in the films Kangaroo (2007), Puthiya Mukham (2009) with Prithviraj and Apoorva (2008), a college drama.

After enrolling in Vimala College, Thrissur for her BA in Functional English, Oviya was approached by director Sargunam for Kalavani (2010). Despite the producer’s doubts, Sarkunam cast her as the female lead after finding a picture of her online and was sure he had the right actor for the role.

She starred opposite Vimal in Kalavani, which received positive reviews and became a box office hit. Oviya’s portrayal of a rural schoolgirl was criticized by critics.

After 2014, Oviya’s acting career started declining and most of the nice roles she was offered were in low-budget films. She starred opposite veteran actor Sarathkumar in the critically panned, unsuccessful 2015 film Sandamarutham.

Her next two Tamil films, Hello Naan Pei Pesuren (2016), a horror comedy directed by Sundar C, and CV Kumar’s heist comedy 144 (2015), did not do so well at the box office. Though the shoot was progressing, another film, the women-centric Bhogi starring Trisha and Poonam Bajwa, was also put on hold.
