Chicago Marathon 2024: How to watch, start time, route, prize money, past winners and more

The 2024 Chicago Marathon takes place on Sunday, marking the 47th annual edition of the popular race.

The list of participants includes some of the world’s best long-distance runners.

The women’s category includes Ethiopian Sutume Kebede, American Keira D’Amato and Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich, who won the 2021 and 2022 races and came second in 2023.

Kenya’s Amos Kipruto and Vincent Ngetich will compete in the men’s event.

The city of Chicago will honor Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum this year following his world record run in 2023. Kiptum tragically died in a car accident with his coach months after his historic win. The young phenom ran the course in just 2:00.35

Chicago Marathon 2024 start time

The Berlin Marathon begins on Sunday, September 29th at 2:50 a.m. ET. Runners start in four different waves:

Prize money at the Chicago Marathon

The 2024 Chicago Marathon varies its prize money in several different categories.

Open Division (Men/Women)

  • 1st place: $100,000
  • 2nd place: $75,000
  • 3rd place: $50,000

Total wheelchair (men/women)

  • 1st place: $25,000
  • 2nd place: $18,000
  • 3rd place: $12,000

The Chicago Marathon also offers a $50,000 bonus for any runner who breaks the course record and a $15,000 bonus for the first American runners to cross the finish line in each division.

Chicago Marathon route

The Chicago Marathon begins in Grant Park and then runs through several historic neighborhoods in the city.

Runners cross the Chicago River six times, through Wrigleyville, the Loop, and finish in South Grant Park, where the race began.

The Chicago Marathon is known for its flat and fast course. There is only one noticeable hill at mile 21.
