The Cougars get their first win with a score of 64-0

Not all winless teams are the same. Cedar Creek proved that on Friday night at Plain Dealing.

The Cougars scored early and often, building an impressive 56-0 lead by halftime and then picking up their first win of the season with a 64-0 win over the Lions.

How dominant were the Cougars in the first half?

It was an endless list of superlatives. Six different players scored touchdowns. The Cougars totaled 250 yards of offense. The defense held Plain Dealing (0-6, 0-4) to minus-9 yards by halftime. Oh, and when Creek scored 56 points, the officials started using a running clock – and there were 8 minutes left in the half.

With the win, the Cougars improve their season record to 1:5 (1:1). Late in the game, the Cougars had a chance to make history by being just one point away from breaking the school record for points in a single game.

Cedar Creek set the tone early on its first possession. Starting at midfield, the Cougars needed just five plays to reach paydirt as Mason Wooden drove into the end zone and also completed the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.

After a three, an out and a punt, Creek took over at its own 37 yards and marched 63 yards in five plays when James Myers did the honors with a touchdown run. With the two-point conversion, Wooden once again gave the team a 16-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Cougars to get the ball back. On Plain Dealing’s second play of its next possession, Myers recovered a fumble deep in Lions territory. This time, eighth-grader Payton Harris had the honor on a pitch from quarterback Cason Floyd. Wooden again completed the two-point conversion, extending the lead to 24-0 with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Plain Dealing again had trouble getting anything going on offense and gave away the puck. This time it was Wyatt Gremillion’s turn to score. He pushed his way into the end zone and you guessed it, Wooden scored on the two-point conversion for a 32-0 lead.

The Cougars kept their foot on the gas and scored twice more before halftime. Trigger Woodard and Floyd each scored a rushing touchdown, while Myers also hauled in a 15-yard pass from Floyd to end the first-half barrage.

Gremillion finished his night with 78 yards on 8 carries by halftime, while Woodard added 63 yards on 5 carries. Myers rushed for 52 yards on two carries and Harris rushed for 67 yards on two attempts. All touchdowns scored in the first half.

With the clock running, Creek head coach William Parkerson subbed in freely. The Cougars scored again when eighth-grader Liam Durrett scored from 27 yards out for the final score. Creek had the ball deep in Lions territory late and had a chance to break the school record as it was stopped on a fourth down play.

Creek won’t have much reprieve after picking up its first win. Undefeated Haynesville comes to Ruston this week to face the Cougars in a district matchup.
