Central College Dutch Fall Sports Update – 11/24/10 | KNIA KRLS Radio

The early lead evaporates when the central volleyball team loses

After comfortably winning the first two sets, the Central College volleyball team lost 18-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-7 at the University of Dubuque on Friday night.

Central (14-6, 1-1 American Rivers Conference) was in control for almost all of the first two sets against the Spartans before going cold and losing the final three. Outside attacker Gracie Pierson had a season-high 16 kills to lead the Dutch, while right attacker Kaitlyn Koel also reached double figures in kills with 10. Colleen Kenney nearly matched her season high with 28 digs, and Pierson added 13 digs for a double-double. Makayla Ribble led the Dutch with 18 assists and Kaitlyn Mumm had five blocks.

Central is back in action today at 11 a.m. at Loras College in Dubuque.

Central Women’s Tennis had a successful first day at the American Rivers Conference Singles Championships

Four Central College women’s tennis competitors advance to the semifinals of the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships on Friday.

In the B flight of the doubles, number 4 seeds Becca Vala and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney initially defeated a duo from Wartburg College 6:3. They defeated a team from Simpson College 6-1 in the second round and will next face No. 2 Loras in the semifinals.

The Dutch also let a doubles team from the C-Flight reach the semifinals. Abbie Den Adel and Emily Blom were seeded No. 2 in the flight and started with a 6-1 win over a duo from Coe College. They also defeated a Luther College team 6-4 in the second round and advanced to face No. 3 Wartburg Flight.

Blom also reached the semifinals in the C-Flight of individual action. After a bye in the first round, she defeated Kendall Olson from Wartburg 5:3, 2:4, 10:5 and then defeated her teammate Taylor Wyeth in the quarterfinals 4:0, 4:2. In the semi-finals she will face Brooke Bloom from Wartburg.

The last person to reach the semifinals was Ava Lucas, the number 3 seed in the D-Flight of the individual players. After a bye in the first round, she defeated Isabella Castle 4-1, 1-4, 10-7 and Cate Bright of Luther 4-2, 1-4, 10-7 in the second round. Lucas will face number 5 from Wartburg, Kylie Flowers, in the semi-finals.

The tournament ends today with the semifinals, final and consolation games.
