Police warn of a TikTok trend, the “door-kicking challenge”

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MarylandMaryland officials are warning residents about a new trend on social media, particularly TikTok.

According to Takoma Park Police, the “Door Kicking Challenge” encourages individuals to kick doors of homes and businesses to gain exposure on social media. According to police, this dangerous activity poses significant risks to property and personal safety.

This trend is not limited to Takoma Park. Videos on TikTok suggest this challenge is occurring in cities across the country.

Police say the challenge is a misdemeanor under Maryland Statute §6-301, commonly referred to as “malicious damage to property.” The penalty depends on the extent and value of the damage and ranges from 60 days in prison and a fine of up to $500 to three years in prison and a fine of up to $2,500.
