“I think I’m a realist – I like to shape people’s daily lives and avoid unnecessary flights of fancy,” shared Giorgio Armani in a conversation with designer Paul Smith while serving as Wallpaper’s guest editor in October 2022. A new collection, titled “Greige,” embodies this design philosophy and represents an everyday wardrobe presented in variations of Mr. Armani’s signature gray-beige hue.

Available exclusively at London department store Selfridges until November 17, 2024, the collection is designed to take you through the day and features 15 different styles, from cashmere knits to wide-leg trousers and louche cuts, a nod to Mr. Armani’s designs from the 1980s and 1990s. Currently, the vintage Armani silhouette is enjoying something of a resurgence, appearing to inspire Anthony Vaccarrello’s Fall 2025 men’s collection for Saint Laurent (Simon Chilvers revealed Mr. Armani’s influence in Wallpaper’s September style issue) and enjoying popularity on vintage resale sites increasing popularity (In January 2024, Depop reported a 20 percent increase in the search term “vintage Armani” compared to the previous month, while on eBay it increased by more than 90 percent in the first two weeks of the month Financial Times).

The new “Greige” collection offers the opportunity to adopt the nostalgic Armani silhouette without having to spend hours searching on resale sites. After Mr. Armani founded his eponymous label in 1975, he quickly adopted the greige shade, which has become a symbol of a kind of understated sophistication. The new collection is also heavily influenced by menswear silhouettes. “Men’s fashion evolved into an idea of women’s fashion,” he said in 2022. “For me, the straightforwardness and efficiency of the masculine wardrobe brought into feminine territory caused big waves.” Long wool coats and structured blazers are a homage to this and play an important role in this latest collection.
