Katy Perry’s New Music Video Is Under Investigation For Possible Law Violations – Here’s What Happened

Katy Perry’s “Lifetimes” music video is under fire after allegations that unauthorized filming caused environmental damage to the protected sand dunes of Ses Salines Natural Park in Spain.

The Balearic Islands Environment Agency issued a press release in mid-August highlighting that proper permission had not been obtained for the filming, triggering an investigation.

According to People’s press release, the Lifetimes shooting was a violation and not an official environmental crime. The Environment Ministry noted that appropriate channels for obtaining a permit were in place, but insisted that this particular production did not take this route.

In the video, shot by Stillz, Perry dances in the dunes of the island of S’Espalmador – a restricted area protected by ropes. The investigation is focused on permit violations and whether or not the filming caused damage to the beach.

“The local video production company assured us that all necessary permits were in place for the video. “We have since learned that approval was in progress, although we were given verbal authorization to proceed,” a label spokesperson for Perry said in a statement released by People. “We … have the utmost respect for this place and the officers charged with protecting it.”

Ses Salines is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches across the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. The World Heritage List consists of sites that are “of outstanding universal value.” The dunes are considered extremely valuable due to their rich biodiversity, which is why their protection is so important.

Although it appears that the production actually believed it had given the go-ahead, the suspicion of damage to the island raises the question of whether or not Ses Salines was the right location for the video. Many of the shots were taken at night with distracting lighting while large crowds danced on the sand. The light-hearted, reckless video shows Perry partying in Ibiza, which makes the location all the more ironic.

Like any other national park, these areas should be treated with respect so that they will continue to exist for years to come. Protections and policies to protect certain areas exist for a reason and need to be understood so that these sites are not destroyed by human activity. Caring only comes with understanding.
