Killer sea monsters have been seen in “gruesome” acts near the California coast

Watching whales in the sea is always a fascinating sight for nature lovers and tourists on boats waiting to catch a glimpse. Last weekend, a group of killer whale calves appeared in Monterey Bay.

Photos clicked and shared on social media by local tour group Monterey Bay Whale Watch showed the whales frolicking in the water. However, one of them was seen bobbing in the water with its prey in its mouth, a black seabird.

The whale’s play with the dead bird is described as “cruel”. However, experts say there are several reasons why the sea creatures do this.

SF Gate reported the act along with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries spokesman Nicholas Rahaim, telling the publication that the behavior could be “playing,” it could be exercise (if it’s a young animal), it could be teaching (when a mother is in the presence of a calf). , etc”.

Orcas hunt in groups and are found both in the open ocean and in coastal waters. Their hunting technique, similar to that of a wolf pack, is the reason why they are also called killer whales.

Killer whales are known to engage in such playful acts. There have been other interesting sightings of these sea creatures recently.

Albino whale spotted

SF Gate reported that a tour group last month spotted a rare killer whale as far south as Ensenada and as far north as British Columbia. It was nicknamed “Frosty” and was all white.

According to Monterey Bay Whale Watch, the albino whale’s milky coloration could be due to either leucism, a genetic disorder in which the animal loses its pigment, or Chediak-Higashi syndrome, a condition that results in partial albinism.

Several more similar orca sightings are scheduled this season. The Monterey Bay Whale Watch group said in a Facebook post that the whale calves “made our second killer whale season so exciting this year and October is just getting started!”
